The Kaesler Viognier is better known as our winemakers ‘Love Child’. Sourced from a single site in Nuriootpa planted in 2009, this special white variety has become an obsession for the winemakers and our customers.
VINTAGE CONDITIONS
Due to La Nina conditions the Barossa region experienced one of its wettest & coolest Spring. This resulted in delayed budburst with the flow on effect on ripening and picking decisions, with Vintage being 3-4 weeks later than usual. Disease pressure was increased by the wet conditions and required diligent vineyard management. Although the season was challenging, our ongoing regenerative farming techniques have assisted with building resilient vines that continue to produce outstanding fruit. This was evident in the 2023 vintage with the winemakers talking about the wine being elegant and structured with depth and length of flavour.
WINEMAKING
A cool and wet growing season meant that yields were slightly above average. Hand harvested at first light by the Kaesler viticultural and winemaking team, the grapes were whole bunch pressed. The juice was settled for 48 hours prior to racking to French oak puncheons. Wild fermentation took place over the next 20 days. After this and for the next 9 months the wines was kept on yeast lees and stirred each week to add complexity. Natural MLF occurred during this period. Bottled mid-January 2024.
