Kaesler Old Vine Shiraz has been consistently produced as an elegant wine, tight in its youth, a wine that is made to age. It represents a different style of Shiraz within the Kaesler portfolio, when compared to its bolder brothers, The Bogan and Old Bastard Shiraz.

The fruit was harvested by hand on the 28th February 2013, after an early morning start hand picking, in order to get most of the fruit off before the days starts to heat up. It was given 8 days on skins and the cap of the ferment wet down twice a day. Once pressed, it is then put into 30% new French oak and the remainder in 1 and 2 year old French oak. Over the next 19 months the wine is racked twice, topped regularly. No filtration.

Crimson red.

Cherry, mixed dark fruits, spice and cedar notes.

Full bodied mouth-filling tannins, lifted with bright acidity. Perfectly balanced and a long finish.

The Old Vine Shiraz block at Nuriootpa, from which some of the fruit is sourced, was spawned from The Old Bastard vineyard (est 1893). The Old Bastard is genetic material that only exists in Australia, its parentage being lost to Phylloxera in Europe in the 1880’s. The fruit from these vineyards was sold to various wineries over the years and often finding a home in some of the Barossa’s most prestigious blends.

2013 Kaesler 'Old Vine' Shiraz

  • Wine Companion 2017 - 94pt

From two vineyard blocks at Nuriootpa 43 and 63yo; hand-picked in the early morning, 8 days on skins, 19 months in
French oak (30% new). Said to be produced as an elegant wine, yet its high octane alcohol speaks of berries well and truly dimpled, if not raisined. You have to acknowledge that Reid Bosward knows these vineyards very well, and that the style is no accident. Regular buyers will not be disappointed.

  • Wine Advocate - 91pt

Very deep garnet-purple in color, the 2013 Shiraz Old Vine has notes of fertile earth, charcoal and yeast extract over the blackcurrant and black plum core with a hint of licorice. Powerful, concentrated and full-bodied on the palate, it offers shedloads of muscular fruit with a solid backbone of rounded tannins and a good long finish.

  • Wine Spectator - 89pt

Wild berry and fresh herb flavors are brambly and have a rustic edge, with chewy tannins and a note of toasted caraway. Drink now through 2022. 800 cases made.
