2016 Avignon GMS 1.5L
The 2016 vintage of the Avignon marks 15 years since the first release, 2001. The name Avignon is a cheeky (yet reverential) nod to the great French wines of the Southern Rhône Valley; “Rhone varietals” Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre (Mataro) are the backbone of famous blends such as in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, just up the river from the city of Avignon.

A major proportion of the fruit to make this wine, comes from our vineyard at Marananga, approximately 8 kms south west of the winery. Here we have a block of Shiraz planted in 1899. Soils are quite different here, consisting of sandy loam, followed by clay with limestone thinly dispersed.

2007 The Bogan Shiraz 3L
Harvest came early in 2007, with tiny yields due to the prolonged drought. At Kaesler our estate vineyards were yielding about 65% less than previous years. However, the old vines, such as the Bogan vineyard seemed to cope so much better than the younger vines due to their deep clay soils.

2008 The Bogan Shiraz 6L
Small yields, eventuated in an earlier than normal harvest. The early part of February was punctuated with a mini heat wave that encouraged us to pick earlier than normal, when that heat subsided many others cancelled their picking dates. As we had already seen our earlier ferments and were pleased, we forged on. This was indeed a grand decision as three weeks later the mother of all heat waves set in and an unprecedented 16 days of 40 degree plus weather pushed the region well beyond it means and limits. We had most of our fruit off and an empty winery when it struck and one last fill saw us complete an early and successful harvest. Good luck or good management? I’ll take both.

2009 The Bogan Shiraz 6L
The 2009 season was unfolding in a very similar way to the infamous 2008. Predictions of heat waves of cataclysmic proportions where being forecast. Due to this, a decision to pick earlier than we had for the last decade was made. The result being wines that have a more pure, bluer and red fruit streak through them. This is a significant step away from the blacker fruit styles that we had produced throughout previous years

Alte Reben Shiraz

2012 Alte Reben Shiraz 6L
100% Shiraz sourced from Kaesler estate vines planted in 1899 at Marananga. This vineyard has a soil type that is very unique and quite different to most of the Kaesler vineyards. We always suspected that we could do a single vineyard wine from this patch, as it is fairly large by old vine standards and not too many can boast custody of nine acres of Shiraz planted three centuries ago in 1899.

2007 Old Bastard Shiraz 6L
The 2007 vintage tested every grower’s resolve but ultimately proved the strength of Kaesler’s old vines. After a dry winter and a challenging run of frosts, the season delivered low yields yet wines of remarkable concentration and character. The deep-rooted heritage vineyards stood resilient where younger vines struggled, producing fruit of intensity and depth that reflected both the hardship and the hardiness of the year.

2015 completes this vineyard’s 122nd orbit of the sun. With cuttings taken from vines delivered to Australia before Phylloxera decimated Europe this vine, and many like it in the Barossa, help re-define the term “old world”. We are the old world. This vineyard was on the brink of death, when we acquired it in 1999. It is testament to just how important and integral the hand of man is in viticulture and the winemaking process. Without our care it would surely have been lost.
