Summary

After sharing another season with her soul mate, the sun, the Old Bastard Shiraz vines were pure and perfect. Old Bastard was first released in 1998.

Vinification

Fruit was hand-picked and sourced from Shiraz vines planted in 1893. Matured in 35% new and the remainder in 1 year old French oak. The wine making procedure is a closely guarded secret, with innovative techniques as yet revealed to new world wine.

Colour

Dark purple red, with a garnet edge.

Nose

Fresh and fruit driven with blackberries, raspberries and blueberries. Some cherry notes on the nose.

Palate

A combination of forest fruits with blackberries and mulberries. Savoury aromatic spices of anise and nutmeg with some coffee and chocolate notes. Silky, delicate tannins; good acidity and well balanced.

Notes

The Old Bastard Shiraz ages beautifully with the berry notes becoming more prominent over time. It has decades to give, cellar up to 20+ years.

Reviews

  • Wine Companion 2017 -95pt

    100% shiraz from the Nuriootpa vineyard planted in 1893;
hand-picked, matured in French oak (35% new). To say it is full-bodied is a masterly understatement: it is huge in every respect. But there is balance, and the display of multi-berry fruits is not obscured by tannins or oak even though they are
omnipresent. Not my style, but commands respect

  • Wine Advocate - 97pt

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2013 Shiraz Old Bastard has a slowly emerging, complex nose of incense, cloves, star anise, tar, underbrush and earth with a blackberry and blackcurrant core plus a touch of wild thyme. The big, full, opulently fruited palate delivers tons of flavor layers and wonderful structure with firm, rounded tannins and a racy acid line supporting the generous fruit through the very long finish.

  • Wine Spectator - 93 pts

Dark, dense and muscular, with a mouthful of blackberry, spice and espresso flavors, accented by a touch of candied ginger.  Robust and intense, featuring flavors that persist on the finish, transmitting power and focus. Drink now through 2030.—M.W.
